Story Circle Model
The Story Circle Model closes the gap in oral language foundations, building pre-literacy skills through questioning, vocabulary, understanding and articulation. After each story has been read to the child, group reflection, discussion and summarization supports the use of recall, framing of sentences and critical thinking, to improve oral language skills.
Moving through the process, the small group will collaborate to expand on the themes of the story, working to understand how sentences come together, and pick out words for vocabulary, building a base for reading development. Listening skills are broadened as is the ability to communicate with others. At this stage, comprehension is easily reinforced, because it is summarized by the children themselves.
The next stage of the Story Circle Model involves the creative expression of the themes and narratives, through music, art and drama. Creativity helps to reinforce understanding and interpretation of the story, as well as support the enhancement of fine motor skills.
The final stage of The Story Circle Model is the creation of a new book, that reimagines the original story. Supported by the facilitators, the book can be in any language. Together, the facilitator and children will organize ideas, work on sentence structure, and put all of the skills built, into practice.
